Independent Retailer vs High Street Retailer

  • 3 min read

Why is working with an independent kitchen retailer a completely different experience?

A recent conversation with a client really struck a chord with me. She told me, “I didn’t even know people like you existed.”

She’d been through the process with a large high street retailer (Wren, in her case) and described it as frustrating, impersonal, and overwhelming. She felt rushed, unheard, and pressured to “sign today to secure the offer.” In the end, she was told the kitchen she wanted simply wasn’t possible.

That’s where I came in.

As an independent kitchen designer & retailer, my approach is completely different. I listen. I take the time to understand how you use your space, how you want it to feel, and what genuinely works for your lifestyle – not what fits into a pre-set showroom display. Together, we explored options that had been dismissed by the high street. I brought samples and talked through ideas in her home, where we could see and feel how they would work in the actual space.

I also project-managing the entire renovation from start to finish. She doesn’t have to juggle a list of tradespeople. I work with a trusted builder and fitter I’ve worked with for years to ensure the process is smooth and stress-free, as well as an electrician and plumber.

I hear stories like this far more often than I’d like. So, what’s the real difference between an independent designer and a high street retailer?

Independent vs High Street Retailer: What to Expect

Independent Retailer (like me)High Street Retailer
Personal consultation in your homeVisit to showroom
Tailored design for your space and lifestyleDesigns often limited to showroom stock
One point of contact from start to finishMultiple departments and teams
Recommended local trades for a smoother processCustomer responsible for managing fitting and trades
Honest advice and no sales pressureFrequent sales targets and “limited-time” offers
Fully project managedSupply only, or fitting at extra cost
High quality, flexible product range through one trusted manufacturerSome ranges limited or discontinued quickly
Turnaround from design to delivery in as little as 8 weeksCan vary from weeks (flat pack) to 12–16 weeks (German ranges)

Does Independent Mean More Expensive?

Not at all. I work with a single independent manufacturer who offers exceptional quality at a competitive price. Without the overheads of multiple showrooms or national advertising campaigns, I’m able to pass that value on to my clients.

Plus, I believe people buy into people. My clients often tell me that it’s my knowledge, personal service, and open communication that makes them feel confident to move forward. You’re not just buying a kitchen – you’re investing in a designer & retailer who’s with you from concept to completion.

The Result?

That client now has a kitchen she was told she couldn’t have. A space that works beautifully for her lifestyle, designed and delivered in a way that felt effortless and enjoyable.

If you’re thinking about a new kitchen and want someone to guide you through every step of the journey with honesty, creativity, and no sales pressure, I’d love to help.

Have a good week!
